At the tail end of the 1950s, when the United States was still relatively naive, the savage and senseless murder of a family in the Midwest outraged the entire country. This film is an adaptation of the unsettlingly detailed and psychologically incisive nonfiction novel written by Truman Capote. Dick Hickock, age20, is serving time in state prison when he overhears a cellmate talking about a wealthy rancher who hid $10,000 in cash in a safe at his home. When Dick is finally let out on parole, he recruits fellow parolee Perry Smith, who is also 20 years old, to help him find the hidden stockpile. In the middle of the night in November of1959, Dick and Perry broke into the home that Herb Clutter owned in Holcomb, Kansas. They were furious because there was nowhere safe to hide, so they woke up the sleeping family and ruthlessly murdered them all. Two friends who stopped by the house before going to church on Sunday discovered the bodies. The murders stun the inhabitants of the Great Plains town, where it is common practice to walk about with doors unlocked.
