Jamaica Inn
The novel is set in 1820 against the foreboding backdrop of windswept Cornish moors, and it chronicles the journey of Mary, a young and vivacious girl who is forced to live with her Aunt Patience after her mother's death. When Mary arrives at the isolated Jamaica Inn, she finds her Aunt is no longer the carefree woman she remembers from her childhood, but rather a drudge who is completely under the spell of her overbearing husband Joss. The Inn has no guests, and the rooms are closed and maintained for storage, but Joss is the leader of a smuggling ring, and Jamaica Inn is the center of his 'free' commerce.
