Janus is an Australian drama television series that aired on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1994 and 1995. A total of 26 episodes were created throughout two series. Janus was a spin-off of the earlier ABC-TV crime series Phoenix. Janus, loosely based on the true story of Melbourne's Pettingill family and the Walsh Street police shootings, follows the bitterly fought prosecutions of a notorious criminal family, the Hennesseys, from the perspectives of the family, the police, and, in particular, the lawyers, prosecutors, barristers, and judges involved in all aspects of the story. When the series begins, four members of the infamous Hennessey clan are acquitted of murdering two young police officers during a botched bank robbery. Melbourne is stunned as brothers Mal and Steve, brother-in-law Darren Mack, and pal Ken Hardy walk free. The prosecutors, judges, magistrates, and police, many of whom are modeled after real-life legal professionals, are desperate to throw the Hennessey members behind jail if at all possible. However, corruption, legal loopholes, delays, and stretched resources conspire to make the group's arrest difficult.
