Andy Yeats, a chemist, understands how dependent the world is on oil; if the world's oil supply were to run out, it would start off a chain reaction: transportation would come to a halt, supplies would stop being delivered, and law enforcement would be overwhelmed. Andy finds his greatest fears are coming true while on a business trip to the Middle East, and his family is separated at this critical juncture. Laura, his adolescent daughter, is alone at home in London while his wife, Elena, and their small son, Sam, are in Paris.
