From October 9, 2008 to April 1, 2009, Life on Mars was a science fiction crime drama television series that aired on ABC. It is an adaption of the BBC's BAFTA-winning original UK series of the same name. Kudos Film & Television, 20th Century Fox Television, and ABC Studios collaborated on the project. The series follows New York City police officer Sam Tyler, who regains consciousness in 1973 after being struck by a car in 2008. The series straddled several genres, including thriller, science fiction, and police procedural, while the fundamental plot remained vague, with the protagonist himself unsure of his condition. Harvey Keitel, Jonathan Murphy, Michael Imperioli, and Gretchen Mol also starred in the series. Life on Mars received great acclaim for its premise, acting, and depiction of the 1970s, but following its launch and a two-month vacation, viewership dropped. On March 2, 2009, ABC announced that it will not order a second season. On September 29, 2009, a DVD package of the entire series was published.
