Love & War

Love & War is an American comedy that ran from September 21, 1992 to February 1, 1995 on CBS. Originally starring Susan Dey as Wally Porter, a Chicago restaurateur, and Jay Thomas as Jack Stein, a sportswriter with whom she had an on-again, off-again relationship, the sitcom was created by Diane English. After the first season, however, the show was revamped and Dey was fired by the show's producers, who said that she and Thomas lacked "chemistry." Annie Potts replaced her as Dana Palladino, who purchased Porter's restaurant and became Jack's love interest. Jack or Wally frequently broke the fourth wall and addressed the camera directly throughout the first season, typically to explain an emotional dilemma. This mechanic was eliminated in subsequent seasons. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David appeared in one episode as themselves as a "thank you" to Diane English for permitting a quick sequence on Murphy Brown in an episode of Seinfeld in which Kramer is cast as the titular character's secretary. Suzie Plakson, Joanna Gleason, Joel Murray, Charles Robinson, and Michael Nouri rounded out the supporting cast. John Hancock, who previously had a recurring role as a judge on L.A. Law alongside Susan Dey, portrayed bartender Ike throughout the first half of the first season until his death from a heart attack in late 1992. His death was subsequently incorporated into the script, and actor Charlie Robinson took his place.
