Maverick

Roy Huggins produced the American Western television series Maverick, which has humorous overtones. The sitcom, which aired on ABC from September 22, 1957 to July 8, 1962, starred James Garner as Bret Maverick, an adroitly fluent cardsharp. Eight episodes into the first season, he was joined by Jack Kelly as his brother Bart, and from then on, Garner and Kelly switched protagonists from week to week, occasionally joining up for the unusual two-brother episode. The Mavericks were Texas poker players who traveled throughout the American Old West and on Mississippi riverboats, continually getting into and out of life-threatening situations involving money, women, or both. They would often have to evaluate a money windfall against a moral quandary. Because both Mavericks were deeply ethical, their consciences often took precedence over their finances. When Garner quit the show after the third season owing to a legal dispute, Roger Moore was cast as their cousin Beau Maverick. Brent Maverick, a third Maverick sibling, was played by Robert Colbert later in the fourth season. No more than two of the series' leads ever appeared in the same episode, and frequently only one.
