Meeting of Minds

Meeting of Minds was a PBS television series that aired from 1977 to 1981 and was developed by Steve Allen. Guests who played key roles in world history appeared on the show. Guests would converse with one another and with host Steve Allen about philosophy, religion, history, physics, and a variety of other subjects. It was thematically very similar to Arthur Voronka's Canadian television series Witness to Yesterday, which aired three years before Meeting Of Minds. One year before Meeting Of Minds, Steve Allen played George Gershwin in an episode of Witness to Yesterday in 1976. The real words of the historical figures were used as closely as possible. Despite the fact that the show was fully written, the scripts were meticulously prepared to give the impression of spontaneous conversation among historical individuals. Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Martin Luther, Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Paine, Francis Bacon, Thomas Jefferson, Voltaire, Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Daniel O'Connell, Catherine II, and Oliver Cromwell were among the guests. Typically, each episode would be broken into two parts and broadcast separately, with the first section introducing most or all of the guests and the second part continuing the topic. There were 24 episodes in total.
