From January 23, 1996 through May 14, 2001, the UPN network aired the American comedy Moesha. A high school student residing in the Leimert Park neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, Brandy Norwood portrays Moesha Mitchell in the series. It was originally intended to be a pilot for the 1995-1996 season of CBS television, but the network rejected it. As a result, UPN showed it as a mid-season substitute. It was the network's first huge success and one of its most popular shows over its entire tenure.
