This is the second version of Michele Placido's film Romanzo Criminale based on Giancarlo De Cataldo's novel, Romanzo Criminale – La serie, which is an Italian television series. Series one immediately became a cult classic in Italy. After Quo Vadis, Baby?, this is the second fiction series the production of which was handled by Sky, and which aired in 2012 on Fox Crime, Sky One, and Sky Arts, all in English with subtitles. From 1977 to 1989, a criminal syndicate in Rome that controls nearly all of the city's heroin trade is the focus of this television series. The Romanesco dialect is spoken by the majority of the cast. Three old buddies, Libanese, Freddo, and Dandi, lead the gang. In addition to fighting among themselves, the gang has to deal with the Camorra and the Sicilian Mafia, which both supply it with heroin, as well as the police, led by Commissioner Scialoja, and the Italian secret services. An homage to the 1970s-90s Italian punk band Banda della Magliana is used to create the storyline.
