Soap is an American comedy that aired from 1977 to 1981 on ABC. The show was designed as a nighttime spoof of daytime soap operas and aired as a weekly prime time comedy lasting thirty minutes. The show's story was presented in a serial manner and includes melodramatic storyline elements such as alien abduction, demonic possession, murder, and kidnapping, much like a soap opera. In 2007, Time magazine named it one of the "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME," and in 2010, TV Guide rated the Tates and the Campbells as number 17 among "TV's Top Families." Susan Harris developed, wrote, and executive produced the show. Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas also served in this capacity. Each new season was preceded with a 90-minute look back at the previous one. In 1994, two of these retrospectives were released on VHS. Over the course of four seasons, 85 episodes of the program were broadcast. The final four episodes of the series originally aired on ABC as one-hour programs. Later, these one-hour shows were divided into 93 half-hour episodes for syndication. All episodes are presently available in four separate DVD box sets for region 1. The sitcom has aired on local syndicated channels as well as Comedy Central and TV Land. It aired on Antenna TV via over-the-air television till December 30, 2012.
