Soldier Soldier is a drama series on British television. The title derives from a traditional ballad of the same name: "Soldier, soldier, will you marry me with your gun, fife, and drum?" - an instrumental version of which served as the theme song for the show. From 1991 through 1997, a total of seven seasons and 82 episodes were produced by Central Television and aired on the ITV network. It depicted the daily routines of troops from B Company, 1st Battalion The King's Fusiliers is a fictional British infantry unit based largely on the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Set in the immediate aftermath of the Cold War, it is considered an accurate picture of army life in the early to mid-1990s, when the British Army was experiencing substantial transformation. This is arguably most evident during the third season, around 1994, when a large number of real regiments were forced to merge owing to army reduction. In the universe of Soldier Soldier, the King's Fusiliers are compelled to merge with the Cumbrian Regiment, another fictional regiment, to form the King's Own Fusiliers. At the time Soldier Soldier aired, the fatality rate was modest, with the majority of fatalities resulting from training mishaps and suicides. More peacekeeping missions than real combat missions were assigned to the military as a whole. Consequently, despite potential domestic issues, the show did a decent job of portraying the army in a somewhat positive light.
