Target

Target was a BBC1 police drama that aired from 1977 to 1978. The 13th Regional Crime Squad was based in Southampton. The show was initially titled Hackett by producer Graham Williams, but he was invited to swap places with outgoing Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe, who renamed the show Target. Patrick Mower portrayed Det. Supt. Steve Hackett, Brendan Price portrayed Det. Sgt. Frank Bonney, Vivien Heilbron portrayed Det. Sgt. Louise Colbert, and Philip Madoc portrayed Det. Chief Supt. Tate. Over the course of two series, seventeen episodes were created. The BBC's reaction to ITV's hugely successful series The Sweeney. The cars used in The Sweeney were Fords, predominantly Cortinas and Granadas; however, Hackett's personal car is American, similar to a Dodge Charger, and appears in several episodes. There is a notable absence of humour when compared to The Sweeney, and the series was originally intended to be more violent than The Sweeney, however seeing it now it is difficult to detect the difference. The second series was more subdued. Also, because Patrick Mower is such a good actor, he tends to overshadow the supporting cast, which was not the case with Sweeney. Dudley Simpson composed the theme music. Each episode lasted approximately 50 minutes. A third season was proposed, with Robert Banks Stewart as producer. He was the producer for two weeks, during which time he planned to recast the supporting cast, tone down the violence, and steer the show away from The Sweeney. However, the head of drama notified him that the series was being canceled and ordered him to come up with a substitute criminal series. He created the private investigator drama Shoestring.
