The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a Japanese anime television series that was first shown in 1980 and was directed by Hiroshi Saitô. The well-known and well-loved work The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain served as the inspiration for this story. The original name of the series was "Tom Sawyer no Bken," and it was aired on Fuji TV's World Masterpiece Theater, which was a staple of animation on the channel and featured an animated adaptation of a different classic novel or story from Western literature each year as part of its programming. It was the second book in the series to feature the work of an American author, following 1977's Rascal the Raccoon, which was the first book to do so. This series was also localized into the English language by Saban International, and it was broadcast on HBO in the year 1988 under the name "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." The later WMT adaptation of "Little Women" was shown in rotation with it during the 7:30AM time slot when it was shown. "All New Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is the title given to a series of videos that were distributed in the United States by Celebrity Home Entertainment. Since January of2011, the anime has been broadcast in the United States on the cable channel TV Japan, which is operated by NHK.
