The Beverly Hillbillies

Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer, Jr. starred in the American situation comedy The Beverly Hillbillies, which aired on CBS for nine seasons from 1962 to 1971. After discovering oil on their farm, a destitute backwoods family is transferred to Beverly Hills, California. It was the first of a genre of "fish out of water" themed television shows developed by writer Paul Henning, and it was followed by several Henning-inspired country-cousin series on CBS. Henning debuted Petticoat Junction in1963, and with Green Acres in1965, he inverted the rags to riches approach. The Jeffersons, McCloud, The Nanny, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Doc all prepared the way for later culture-conflict shows like The Jeffersons, McCloud, The Nanny, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Doc. Despite being panned by many critics at the outset, it immediately became a great ratings success on CBS for the most of its nine-year existence. For eight of its nine seasons, The Beverly Hillbillies was among the top twenty most watched programs on television, twice ranking as the year's most popular series, and with a number of episodes that are still among the most watched television episodes of all time. Because to the series' enduring popularity, 20th Century Fox released a remake in 1993.
