In1935, Louisa Durrell, a financially constrained widow whose life has gone apart, chooses to relocate from England to the Greek island of Corfu with her four children (three sons and one girl). Once there, the family moves into a shabby, collapsing old home without electricity. But living on Corfu is inexpensive; it is a paradise on earth, and the Durrells proceed to establish their new existence, complete with all of its problems, adventures, and relationship-building.
