The Lieutenant

Gene Roddenberry's debut television series, The Lieutenant, aired in the United States. On NBC, it ran on Saturday nights in the fall of 1963 and winter of 1964. From a production standpoint, it was produced by one of the most successful in-house production businesses of MGM's 1960s, Arena Productions. The Lieutenant takes place at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps' West Coast outpost, and depicts the members of the Corps in peacetime against a backdrop of Cold War tensions. Second Lieutenant William Tiberius Rice, a rifle platoon leader and a Camp Pendleton training instructor, is the protagonist of the film. The Lieutenant is a one-hour drama on the experiences of both enlisted Marines and general commanders. On August 14, 2012, Warner Archive Collection published two half-season packages of the show on DVD.
