The series is about Ryan Atwood, a troubled kid from a broken home who is taken in by Sandy and Kirsten Cohen, who are rich and kind. Ryan and his surrogate brother Seth, a socially awkward but smart teen, deal with life as outsiders in the rich world of Newport Beach. Ryan and Seth spend a lot of time figuring out their relationships with girl-next-door Marissa Cooper, Seth's childhood crush Summer Roberts, and the fast-talking loner Taylor Townsend. In the stories, there is a clash between the shallow, materialistic, and closed-minded community where the Cohens live and their idealistic family. The series has some postmodernist elements and is a mix of melodrama and comedy.
