The Samurai

Senkosha Productions produced The Samurai, a Japanese historical fiction television series in the early 1960s. Onmitsu Kenshi was the original Japanese title. The series debuted on TBS in 1962 and lasted until 1965, with ten self-contained story arcs of 13 episodes each. Two black-and-white feature films by Toei Company, made in 1964 by the same crew that created the TV series, as well as a stage production, were also developed. Despite its initially low budget, The Samurai proved to be a huge success. It was the first Japanese television program to air in Australia, when it launched in 1964 and quickly gained a cult following among the local youthful population. Despite its enormous popularity in Australia, as well as success in Japan, New Zealand, and the Philippines, the series was not extensively broadcast overseas, and its fame is mostly limited to those nations. In 1965, it was followed by the spin-off series The New Samurai, which had an entirely new main character but was discontinued after only 39 episodes, compared to the original series' 128 episodes. In 1973, a color TV series for 26 new episodes was produced in an unsuccessful remake and then a short-lived revival. Takeda Pharmaceutical funded the entire TV series.
