The State

The State is a half-hour sketch comedy television show that aired on MTV in the United States between December 17, 1993, and July 1, 1995. The show mixed odd characters and circumstances to deliver sketches that were well received by its intended teenage audience. The show was developed, acted in, scripted, directed, and edited by 11 twenty-something comedians. Several memorable characters were created for the show, and their catchphrases were popular for a brief period. The performers would frequently appear as themselves and address the audience to promote bogus contests or to deliver spoof public service announcements. The State's sketches, like Monty Python's, were occasionally linked in some way: a punchline or visual that finished one skit often served as a lead-in to the next. On July 14, 2009, the series was released on DVD after years of legal wrangling over the music to many of the episodes. A State film with all of the original troupe members is in the works, but it has been postponed due to the 2007-2008 screenwriters strike, and no release date has been set.
