Josh Berman created the sitcom, while Mimi Leder and Paul Redford executive produced and directed it. The 22-episode series was canceled after 13 episodes, USA Today reported on Oct. 26, 2006. The story arc of discovering Sara Collins intended to finish, leaving a wider conspiracy mystery if the series was continued. Fox confirmed the show's conclusion on November 16, 2006. Vanished's final episode premiered online on December 8, 2006. A few months before the show ended, the production team was directed to explain Sara's destiny by the 13th episode, but no other plotlines were resolved.
