When a Cincinnati radio station changes from quiet to top-40 music, its employees must adapt rapidly. Programming director Andy Travis hires Venus Flytrap to collaborate with Dr. Johnny Fever. Neurotic newsman Les Nessman, eager beaver Bailey Quarters, unscrupulous salesman Herb Tarlek, blonde bombshell Jennifer Marlowe, the station's ultra-capable receptionist, and station manager Arthur Carlson, whose mother owns WKRP, complete the colorful group.
