Peter Benchley produced the syndicated television program Amazon. It was created by the Canadian production companies Alliance Atlantis Communications and WIC Entertainment, as well as the German company Beta FilmGmbH. In 1999 and2000, first-run syndication aired all 22 episodes of the series. The drama series centered on six survivors of a plane crash in the Amazon rainforest. The gang encounters a Native American tribe almost immediately, and relations are anything than cordial. The gang is adopted by a strange tribe derived from British colonists who became lost in the Amazon in the sixteenth century. At best, relations with the Chosen are precarious. The majority of the gang escapes the Chosen, only to stir up a hornet's nest with a band of cannibals lead by a deranged American woman intent on dominating the local tribes. A second season was never created after the conclusion of the first season on a cliffhanger. In2011, the series was published on DVD due to its continuing popularity. Rob MacGregor penned a novelization of the two-hour pilot, and on August8,2000, Harper published a mass-market paperback edition. The German title was Amazonas - Gefangene des Dschungels.
