Legendary Amazons
The film is set in early 11th-century China, during the reign of the Song Dynasty's Emperor Renzong. The emperor neglects state concerns in favor of personal pleasures, while the government devolves into corruption and war rages on the Song Dynasty's borders. The Song Dynasty is being invaded by the soldiers of Western Xia's rival realm. Yang Zongbao is the last surviving member of the Yang clan, a line of generals who had devoted their life to protecting the Song Dynasty against foreign invaders. He appears to perish tragically in battle as a result of the Imperial Tutor Pang's refusal to send reinforcements to assist him. Mu Guiying, Yang Zongbao's bereaved wife, leads the other Yang clan widows into combat to perpetuate their husbands' legacy.
