Pete Young takes a risk for the first time — perhaps the only risk of his young life — when he applies for and gets his dream job as a batboy for the New York Empires. The problem is that Lynne, his single mother, doesn't know what he's doing. Up until now, he's been the good boy, while his older sister Betsy has always been in the doghouse for being a rebel. Pete goes to a strict Catholic high school with his best friend, Mike, who hopes to make money off of Pete's new position in life. Pete's new family at work includes Conrad Dean, the team's captain and star third baseman, who has always been one of Pete's heroes and now acts as an older brother. Lou Russo, Pete's boss, is a rough but fair equipment manager who becomes a much-needed father figure. Also in the clubhouse are Carlos Tavares, a rookie who thinks Pete is his good luck charm, and Jose Marquez, the Empires' territorial head batboy. Pete is thrilled to be on his favorite team, but he still has to deal with life at home and in the big leagues, where he has to deal with moral dilemmas and curve balls.
