Fullmetal Alchemist
Edward and Alphonse Elric are alchemy experts. Alchemy relies on the premise of Equivalent Exchange— something of equal value must be sacrificed to generate anything. Edward performs Human Alchemy on his mother when she dies, breaching one of Alchemy's biggest taboos. He and Alphonse decide to try, but something goes horribly wrong. Edward loses a leg and Alphonse his body. Ed saves Al by linking his spirit to armor, but he loses an arm and leg.
