For the Ten Network in1981, Reg Grundy Organization developed Punishment, an Australian soap opera. It was set in a men's prison in an attempt to replicate the popular soap opera Prisoner in a more macho setting. Punishment's producers tried to differentiate the show from Prisoner by adding more reality, but the formula failed to draw large audiences. Even though the show had only shown three episodes, Network Ten declared it a flop, and it was swiftly withdrawn off the schedule. Later that year, the remaining 26 episodes were aired outside the ratings. Single-camera filming was unusual for a soap opera, yet it was used here. Many renowned Australian actors, including Brian Wenzel, Barry Crocker, Michael Preston, Ross Thompson, Anne Haddy, George Spartels, Cornelia Frances, Lisa Peers, and Julie McGregor, were in the regular cast. During the first episode, Mel Gibson took the role of a prisoner. After the first few episodes, Kris McQuade, who played Gibson's love interest, was dropped from the show because of the actor's departure. Alan Coleman was the executive producer and director.
