It's based on a book by Eileen Chang. It's a story about love and fate in 1930s Shanghai, and it's set in the city. In a Shanghai factory, Manjing (Wu Chien-lien), the daughter of wealthy Nanjing merchants, meets Shujun (Leon Lai), the son of wealthy merchants. They fall in love. The fact that Manlu (Anita Mui) works at a nightclub as a "hostess" doesn't make Shujun like her family any less. They fall in love in stages. First, Manjing isn't sure if she wants to get married. Then, Shujun doesn't want to be married to her family, and the family abuses and enslaves Shujun in a way that looks like it was planned. In the end, Shujun and Manjing meet again after a long time apart. They realize that their happiness is only in their memories, and that they didn't have the chance to do things together or come to a conclusion.
