Monte Walsh
Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins are seasoned cowhands who will take on whatever ranch job comes their way, but "there is nothing they cannot do from a horse." Their lives are divided between months spent on the range and trips into town on occasion. Monte has a long-standing connection with prostitute Martine Bernard, while Chet has fallen under the spell of the hardware store's widowed owner. Their days are filled with camaraderie and competitiveness with the other cowboys, until one of the hands, Shorty Austin, loses his job and becomes involved in cattle rustling and murder. Monte and Chet then discover that their lives on the range have been irreversibly redirected.
