The Germans always seem to know about escapes, and the two guys, Manfredi and Johnson, fell into a trap and died. And the leaker is J.J. Sefton, a shady character who gladly trades with the guards and appears to have obtained stuff and privileges that no other prisoner appears to have. No information was given to the Germans, and Sefton has no intention of fleeing. He intends to survive the war in comfort, but not by spying for the Germans.
