The narrative of three generations of a Jewish family in Hungary who rose from poverty to wealth and power in the decaying Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a judge, he feels split when his government supports anti-Semitism. To enhance his career as a champion fencer and Olympic hero, his son converts to Christianity, but he is caught up in the Holocaust.
