Suspense

Anthology series Suspense aired on CBS in the United States from 1949 to 1954. From 1942 through1962, it was broadcast on radio under the same title. As was the case with many early shows on television, the show aired live from New York City's streets. Presented by host Rex Marshall, who advertised Auto-Lite spark plugs, batteries, headlights, and other auto supplies, the show was sponsored by the Auto-Lite firm. There were some adaptations from radio shows like Suspense, while others were written from scratch for television. Many scripts, like the radio show, were based on well-known authors' works of literature. For the series, classics like Edgar Allan Poe and Agatha Christie were adapted, while contemporary authors like Roald Dahl and Gore Vidal also had stories adapted for the show. In addition to Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, Franchot Tone and Robert Emhardt also participated on the show as did Leslie Nielsen and Lloyd Bridges, among others. Despite the fact that the show was shown live, most of the programs were filmed on kinescope. However, of the 260 episodes, only roughly 90 are still in existence today.
